Researchers in Europe evaluate encouraging data on COVID-19.
International researchers and mathematicians are considering the rates of transmission and levels of social activity in recently released studies. Their findings support the possibility that herd immunity may be achieved sooner than previous models predicted. Herd immunity refers to the point at which a virus starts to wane and spread reduces dramatically.
Researchers with Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found that immunity to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 may be significantly higher than prior research has suggested. A study out of the University Hospital Tübingen in Germany shows that those who have experienced infection by other strains of coronavirus have some immunity to COVID-19.
Nottingham and Stockholm Universities have a new mathematical model that supports fewer people needing to be infected by COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity levels. With these projections, the percentage of the population that must become immune decreases from 60% to 43%.
“One interesting observation was that it wasn’t just individuals with verified COVID-19 who showed T-cell immunity but also many of their exposed asymptomatic family members,” said Soo Aleman, a consultant and professor who has tested for coronavirus from the onset of the outbreak. “Moreover, roughly 30 per cent of the blood donors who’d given blood in May 2020 had COVID-19-specific T cells, a figure that’s much higher than previous antibody tests have shown.”
